in Physiology or Medicine was announced today on October 8. This year's
prize went to Dr. Leland H.
Hartwell,
Dr. R. Tim Hunt, and Dr. Paul M. Nurse. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry
will be announced on October 10. Please summarize the highlights of the
contributions of this year's Nobel Laureates (Physiology and Chemistry)
in one sheet. Due 10/12 (Fri).

(You can bring the printout to the class, if you'd like to.)
- Prenote assignment (Due 9/21 Fri): Chapter 3. pp.57-66
- Thinking assignment: the sign convention of work
- Q: van der Waals equation of state: Why V-nb rather than V+nb?
Clue: Let's focus on the effect on p [= RT/(V-nb) - a(n/V)^2].
p would be higher due to the reduction in free volume (i.e. repulsion).
p(vdW) [= RT/(V-nb)] > p(ideal) [= RT/V] (where b > 0)
