I can recommend "The Wealth and Poverty of Nations", particularly when juxtapostioned against "Guns, Germs and Steel". Nature vs. nurture with a cast of billions.

For comic relief, you can also try Gaiman/Pratchett's "Good Omens" or Karl Marx's "Das Kapital".
